City of Flagstaff, AZ

The City of Flagstaff, AZ first began studying the possibility of using biodiesel blends back in 2001. By 2003, they were ready to give B20 a try and have been using biodiesel blends every since. To date, the city has used more than 1.5 million gallons of B20, according to James Brohamer, Fleet Management Supervisor with the City of Flagstaff. The city currently uses blends ranging from B5 - B20 in approximately 200 diesel units. The vehicles and equipment that run on biodiesel blends range from loaders, to refuse trucks, to fire trucks. In addition they sell biodiesel to the county transit authority for use in municipal buses that run throughout the city and county.

"We use biodiesel because it reduces our dependence on foreign oil and it's renewable, domestically produced and better for our air quality," said Brohamer. "With biodiesel we have realized significant emissons reductions and have been very pleased overall."

Brohamer added that he gets calls all the time from others who are thinking about making the switch to biodiesel blends and want to learn more about Flagstaff's experience.

There is also a public pump with a card lock system available in Flagstaff where area residents can fill up.
