April 2003: Alcoa Davenport
Works based in Davenport, Iowa, was honored with an Outstanding
Environmental Stewardship award by the Iowa Soybean Promotion
Board and the National Biodiesel Board for its conversion
from regular diesel products to soy biodiesel. Alcoa Davenport
uses a B20 blend and is significantly improving the levels
of exhaust fumes emitted within the plant by 30-80%. Alcoa
switched all of its diesel-powered equipment to biodiesel
last year. It's estimated Alcoa will use 250,000 gallons of
biodiesel this year, which equates to using all of the beans
from a 100 acre soybean farm. Alcoa Davenport Works makes
alumimum sheet and plate for the aerospace, automotive, lithographic
and specialty product markets and has 2,000 employees.
