President Bush Unveils Dramatic Alternative Fuels Strategy

President Bush called for an enhanced Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS) that would include biodiesel and other alternative fuels to help make America more energy independent.  In his State of the Union speech, the President said: "It's in our vital interest to diversify America's energy supply," and included in his strategy a call to "...expand the use of clean diesel vehicles and biodiesel fuel."

The President asked Congress to join him in pursuing the goal of reducing U.S. gasoline usage by 20 percent in the next ten years - or "Twenty In Ten."  Both sides of the aisle stood and applauded.

The Democrats responded in support of alternative fuels.   In the party’s official response, Sen. Jim Webb (D-VA) said:  “We are looking for affirmative solutions that will strengthen our nation by freeing us from our dependence on foreign oil, and spurring a wave of entrepreneurial growth in the form of alternate energy programs. We look forward to working with the President and his party to bring about these changes.”
