Biodiesel, Next Stop Heating Oil

Success Story: Devine Brothers Say Bioheat® fuel Business is Divine

With home heating oil prices said to be the highest in years this winter, consumers, specifically in the northeastern U.S., are looking for an alternative. Not only that, but because of the volatile prices and other issues, homeowners want to utilize a fuel that is from within our borders, and more environmentally sound.

This has gotten many people to look at Bioheat® fuelTM, home heating oil containing a percentage of biodiesel, usually 5 percent. From there, they look to suppliers such as Devine Brothers of Norwalk, Conn.

"Our heating oil business has increased 1000 percent this heating oil season, and that is from the people coming to us because they heard we are carrying Bioheat® fuel," said Michael Devine President of Devine Bros. "I only first heard about biodiesel two winters ago, when I received a brochure for the National Biodiesel Conference. I had to look up biodiesel on the Internet to find out what it was, but I attended that conference and it changed me, and my purpose.

"It's become a labor of love for me, in being able to take the fuel oil industry, with peoples' negative perceptions of it, to a business where people approach me and say, 'Thanks for trying to do something better, thanks for investing in the futures of renewables.' I'd never been thanked for being in the oil business in my life," said Devine. "I feel like the 20 year old college student who wants to go out and make a change in the world, and I'm realizing it at 40."

The Bioheat® fuel and concrete and building supply company, who has plans to soon change its name to Devine Bioheat® fuel, was featured on the CBS Early Show and CNBC's Power Lunch in Fall 2005. More media attention was garnered when Senator Joe Lieberman (D-CT) visited a home using Bioheat® fuel with Michael Devine in December 2005.

Bioheat® fuel has many adv antages regardless of current prices, but prices at times were favorable for using Bioheat® fuel this winter. Bioheat® fuel shares benefits to oil burners that biodiesel does to engines. It works as a cleansing agent, cleaning out debris from years of straight petroleum product, and is safer to handle.
